Art by Basile Godard

THE SUNLIGHT SPLINTERED.

You reach the end of the ash-gray hall at a run, hands fumbling for an antique door handle. And then you stumble, fall, tumble—any number of adjectives, depending on where, exactly, the door opened—into a radio station.

The equipment is old and dusty, but devoid of cobwebs to the observant eye. And it's dark, save for whatever light makes it through the windows. They display disjointed locations; perhaps one shows an upside-down tower, while its neighbors frame the crumbling pavement of a rotting car park and the stripped out interior of a sewer. Whatever the case, peering through one window reveals a landscape that impossibly doesn't connect to the next.

The door is still there, the only exit to this grubby room. It opens somewhere, anywhere else in this distorted world. And once you leave, it no longer leads back whence you came.

Where do you go?

THE LIGHT, DIVIDED.

A sun on one horizon, a full moon on the other. They're luminous but unreal, like they were plucked from a sky and pasted to a flat, starless backdrop. You can see only one, depending on which side you entered; it's essentially random. Both "sides" overlap like alternate dimensions and you can't see anyone who isn't on the same side as you. Light or dark, you walk in the light of a muted sun or an overbright moon. It never feels quite real.

Neither star nor satellite seem to move from their position. The passage of time is at a standstill.

Regardless of which side you're on, you'll find signs that you aren't alone. What someone does on one side affects the other, so moving an item or writing something down will translate to floating items and mysteriously appearing letters. Speech doesn't travel...unless there's a radio. Radios may turn on and off, with voices audible through the white noise. And if you walk past a mirror, the reflection isn't your own. Instead, it acts as a window to the other side.

In-character observations:
  • Anyone sensitive to time, space, and related dimensional shenanigans will feel they're distorted. And it isn't something they can fix, at least not with powers.
  • It's possible to cross dimensions if a character has related powers, but they'll suffer backlash and significant stress from the transition. Successive jumps aren't gonna fly.
  • If a character is affected by the sun or moon, they'll find neither holds sway over them here; e.g., vampires can walk in daylight and werewolves won't shift in the full moon.
TL;DR: Whatever this is, it isn't natural.

THE SHADOW REALM.

Outdoors, there are shadows on the prowl.

Silent and eerily insubstantial, they trail after you like blind spots given form. Staring at them too long is unsettling but, for the most part, they're content to watch you back...if they can watch. They don't seem to have eyes.

When that isn't enough, however, they attack. Stealing the shape of monsters from other worlds, they may lack special powers, but that doesn't keep them from being dangerous. When in doubt, you're safest indoors.

But maybe that isn't good enough for you. Or maybe you just fucked up. Either/or.

RADIO WAVES.

If you aren't wondering how you got here, you're probably at least asking why. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be anyone around who can answer your questions. Everyone else is as clueless as you.

But, some time after you arrive—whether it's days, hours, minutes, or seconds—the dead air stirs. The atmospheric pressure drops and playhouse lightning arcs across the facsimile of a sky. It's a storm that warns of what's to come, as an earthquake shifts the ground beneath your feet. Around you, buildings flood, and water pours out in falls only half aware of gravity. Wind hurls debris at such high speeds, it turns into shrapnel. Rain pelts you from above and below as the temperature plummets. It starts to snow.

Somehow, the sun and moon remain visible through the turmoil. A collection of mirrors scattered through the world don't reflect their light; instead, it passes through them and illuminates the other side. These specific mirrors, all set in ash-gray frames that match the halls, are untouched in the unfolding natural disasters, and standing before them will shield you as well. Consider them havens in the chaos, proverbial eyes in the storm.

In the dark, a radio turns on of its own accord. Is someone—something—talking to you?

INTO ALL OUR DARKEST FEARS.

Welcome to THE WASTEYARD's first test drive! Some quick things to remember:
  • Our TDMs tie into the game plot. As such, any applicants can keep their TDM threads as game canon.
  • The network is exclusive to in-game characters. TDM characters can only use radios.
  • There is a language barrier, so please mention what language your character speaks somewhere.
  • We don't have a fixed day ratio; instead, you pace yourself at your discretion.
  • Characters may face backlash when using any powers.
  • Mark if your character is on the sun or moon side of the divide. The choice is yours as the player.
  • If you have any questions, please direct them to our FAQ!
And that's all, folks. So take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!

[ Won't need one? She scoffs, but doesn't bother arguing. If he wants to die in the nuclear apocalypse, that's his prerogative. Hell, he might not ever get out of this place, anyway.

It's just another piece of history to her, but Earth exists for him, so she attempts to deliver the news with some level of sensitivity. Meaning she doesn't say "everything got nuked to hell".
]

Mutually assured destruction.

[ It's absolutely idiotic that countries had weapons that could destroy the entire planet like that, in her opinion. They should've fought with honor. ]

Some stupid computer launched a bunch of nuclear missiles to try and fix overpopulation. [ With a bitter laugh: ] Guess she succeeded.

[ There's, what, a thousand people left on the Eligius ship? She doesn't know the exact numbers, but she's pretty sure Earth had a hell of a lot more people than that in 2052. ]

We called it Praimfaya.

Sounds about right.

( he's not surprised that, somehow, people would find a way to kill people and that technology would be involved. he's seen the level of power some people have and the level of darkness they can ascend to if more power is just within their reach.

his own flesh and blood had fallen prey to that, hadn't he? )

Where I come from, people still like to kill people. They threaten nuclear war but no one's had the balls to pull the trigger yet. Muchas posturas. Doubt I'll be able to see that anyway.

( gabe might be but hopefully it doesn't happen like that. )
gonplei: (Default)

[personal profile] gonplei 2019-06-05 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She doesn't quite know what muchas posturas means, but she can figure the gist out from its similarities to English; she's fairly sure it's something like 'a lot of posturing', which doesn't surprise her in the least. Octavia hates the politics side of war. She believes in taking action, fighting for what you want. She sure as hell doesn't believe in sending others to fight for you while you sit in your fortress.

Scrunching up her nose in confusion:
]

What's that supposed to mean?

[ Doubt I'll be able to see that anyway. Ominous as hell, if nothing else. Like he doesn't expect to be there. ]

If you're dying and you didn't mention it 'til now, I'm going to kick your ass.

[ She'd feel like a real dick for not helping him out more when they were running from those shadows. ]

I'm not dying.

( that was the exact opposite of what was happening. if anything, he doubts he could die, not with what he was carrying around inside of him. )

You're a little violent. Anyone ever tell you that?

( he doesn't sound too upset about that. he almost sounds amused, actually. )

But clear your conscious. I'm not dying.

[personal profile] gonplei 2019-06-05 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Octavia snorts out a dry laugh at that. Yeah, she's been told that a few times. Usually not with such a light-hearted tone. ]

You haven't seen anything yet.

[ It's half off-handed retort, half serious. He's only seen Octavia Lite. He hasn't seen Blodreina. She'll see how amused he sounds when that happens. He's been kind so far, though, and it feels good to be treated like a person instead of the universally despised Red Queen, even if it's only because he doesn't know about it. ]

...I'm Octavia, by the way. [ She'd never given him her name back there. She hasn't been giving her name out particularly freely, what with stranger danger and all, but Robbie seems nice. Nice enough to give her name to, at least. ]

( one day, they'll have to sit down and swap stories about the other people they are. might find that they have a little more in common than meets the eye. )

Good. It'll probably be needed if this place keeps up like this.

( for some reason, he has the feeling that shadows that attack won't be the worst of what this place holds. it almost seems like a gateway thing, an introduction to what everyone's going to get to deal with since they were so lucky to end up here. )

Robbie. ( had he said that? maybe but he says it again since they're doing proper introductions. ) Nice to find that I'm not the only person here.

( it would have felt a little too much like the hell dimension if that was the case. )
gonplei: (Default)

[personal profile] gonplei 2019-06-05 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She's not sure 'nice' is the word. Octavia doesn't feel much more comfort knowing she isn't alone here; people tends to mean danger. ]

How'd you get here?

[ If they can figure out how they got here, maybe they can figure out how to get out. ]

The last thing I remember is closing the door on my cryo-chamber.

[ Maybe this is all a cryo-induced dream. She wouldn't be surprised. ]
calculo: (T H I R T Y S I X)

[personal profile] calculo 2019-06-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Your...cryo chamber?

( now, that's something he hasn't heard before. it would be all too easy to just focus in on that, to start asking her questions so she doesn't notice that he hadn't answered the question himself.

but, there's always lying. the truth, such as it is, is something he doesn't think many people are going to believe. )

I was about to take a trip. ( to a hell dimension. )
gonplei: (Default)

[personal profile] gonplei 2019-06-06 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Me, too.

[ A trip to space, to wait out the next decade until Earth was inhabitable again. ]

If you could call it that.

[ Not much of a vacation, being herded into a spaceship on a time-crunch before the Hythylodium bombs got launched then being laid into a cramped cryo-chamber while her brother told her he wished she were dead. ]

I was supposed to end up somewhere better than here.
calculo: (F O R T Y S I X)

[personal profile] calculo 2019-06-06 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Where were you supposed to end up?

( if she's talking, he's going to keep asking. keeps the spotlight off him and keeps them both somewhat relaxed. better than being wound up and at each other's throats. )

Guessing it wasn't a cruise ship in the Mediterranean.
gonplei: (Default)

[personal profile] gonplei 2019-06-06 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Cruise ship? [ Octavia wrinkles her brow. She doesn't even know what that is, and although she knows about the Mediterranean Sea's existence, that's about all she knows about it. ] No.

[ She crosses her arms, bitterly recalling her last moments on Earth — because this surely isn't it. Being double-crossed, having her army either fall or surrender in the gorge, watching the bombs get launched on Eden. All for that damn valley she had to wait 10 years in cryosleep for anyway. ]

Earth.
calculo: (T H I R T Y T H R E E)

[personal profile] calculo 2019-06-06 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh.

( yeah, that makes complete sense. it doesn't but it's her world and not his. if she was going to earth, she was going to earth. )

And instead you came here. And found me. Probably not the best trade off you could get. ( he pushes himself to his feet and nods at the chair. ) Let me look at your leg.
gonplei: (Default)

[personal profile] gonplei 2019-06-06 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I said it's fine, [ she says, not angry but emphatic. To even say it's bothersome would be showing weakness she's been trained out of. A warrior doesn't let something small like this affect them. Besides, it's nothing compared to the other injuries she's suffered in the past. ]

Trust me. I've had much worse.

[ Like being stabbed in the gut and left for dead, or poisoned into a coma, or— basically anything that's ever happened to her. She leads an eventful life. ]
calculo: (S I X T Y F O U R)

[personal profile] calculo 2019-06-06 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
And I said sit down so I can make sure you're not going to need your leg amputated in a week.

( irresistible force meet immovable object. )

I don't care if you've had much worse. This is what's going on now and you need to be able to walk.

( sit down. )

[personal profile] gonplei 2019-06-07 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
What, are you a doctor now?

[ She's not a fan of being told what to do, but she takes a seat and crosses her arms impetuously. As soon as he gets close enough, she shoves him with the sole of her foot, not hard enough to hurt but enough to be annoying. As a little sister, 'irritating' is in her blood. ]

I can still kick with it. It's fine.
calculo: (F O R T Y T H R E E)

[personal profile] calculo 2019-06-07 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
( she's arguing but she does sit down which robbie's going to take as a win...until he steps closer and she shoves him backwards. he stumbles, just barely, but enough and scowls. )

So can I and I've got two good legs.

( was this how it was going to be? were they going to kick each other until someone couldn't kick anymore? )

Just let me look. ( he comes back closer again, actually prepared for a kick now. ) Or are you going to be dumb about it?
gonplei: (Default)

[personal profile] gonplei 2019-06-09 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently you're going to dumb about it if I don't.

[ Very 'I know you are, but what am I?'

She does stick her leg out for him to look at, at least, although she's still sunk down in the chair with her arms crossed so he knows she's Not Enjoying This.
]

It's a scrape. I've been stabbed before.
calculo: (N I N E T Y F I V E)

[personal profile] calculo 2019-06-09 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
So've I, imagine that.

( they could be stab buddies later. but, she finally listens and he crouches down, bending over her leg to make sure it wasn't going to get infected or otherwise cause her any issues later. hospitals seem to be in short supply here so trauma triage was going to have to be a thing. )

You should wrap it with something if you don't want hurt and other crap to get the wound. I don't care how many times you've been stabbed and how strong you are, an infection's going to knock your ass out.
gonplei: (Default)

ahhh sorry for lateness i got knocked out by migraines!

[personal profile] gonplei 2019-06-16 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't exactly clean it.

[ Running water who? I don't know her.

She'll just have to make do. She grabs at the end of her jacket and unceremoniously tears a piece of fabric away; she's never been much for aesthetics, so the ruined fashion doesn't bother her in the least. It was always going to get destroyed one way or another. Might as well go out doing something useful.
]

You know how to bandage a wound, or was all that doctor talk just to sound smart? 'Cause I could use some extra hands.
calculo: (F O U R)

it's all good!

[personal profile] calculo 2019-06-16 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how to bandage a wound.

( he hasn't had to bandage any of his wounds in a long, long time but the knowledge never really leaves you. he crouches down in front of her and reaches for her leg to straighten it a bit so she can get the bandage around it. )

You want me to do it or you got it?
