Hey. It's William. [ He sounds distracted, which, oddly enough, means this is more to-the-point than usual: his words slightly clipped, fewer hesitations. ] I have a request. If you see any symbols or markings—write them down? Take a picture, carve them in a piece of wood, whatever. And make a note of where you found them.
I'm trying to put something together. [ In this place where everything's constantly falling apart. He's not being vague for the sake of it—it's hard to explain his conviction that the symbols matter. That they must mean something. It'd be harder still to explain the knot in his stomach, the feeling that if he'd only known what they meant, what Ruth had gone through could have been prevented. ]

[ It only seems natural—he'd looked at the markings and seized on the symbols reminiscent of t and w. And judging by the slings and arrowheads littering the landscape, maybe it makes sense the alphabet would have more in common with runes than modern English. ] Which ones?

Those are all runes. Sōwilō, tiewaz, and laguz are their names.
